Congress needs to choose leader on merit: Jaitley
Speaking further on the dynastic politics of Congress, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that unless the Congress chooses leaders on the basis of merit and probability, the expansion of the party is not feasible. Jaitley said this in response to the questions after addressing Berkeley India Conference by video conference.
He said that the Congress party did not match the ground reality and India’s aspirations.
Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, addressing students in Berkeley University of California a few weeks ago, had said on the question of dynasty in Congress that there is dynasty not only in the Congress but in most parties.
Responding to a question, Jaitley said, “The whole process of the party (Congress) to form the leadership in the party is not in line with the aspirations of India.”
He said, “Therefore, unless it becomes a more structural party, and does not select leaders on the basis of merit and probability, I do not think that by then it will be able to increase its position.”
Jaitley is leaving for a week-long tour of America tomorrow morning. There he will participate in the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
