On a day when RJD chief Lalu Prasad seemed rattled by uncomfortable questions asked of him by newsmen in New Delhi, his younger son and deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was busy in Patna thrashing out his party’s new strategy for interface with electronic and print media.

The urgency of Tejashwi’s meeting with state spokesperson was defined by way the media grilled the RJD chief in New Delhi and the controversy that followed Prasad’s unsavoury comments about the media persons, on Wednesday.

Sources said the deputy chief minister asked the state spokespersons to be fully prepared before attending any TV debate and also brief top rung party leaders, including him and the RJD chief, about the subject of the debate. The message given was clear: Articulate well through facts.

“We were asked to be more expressive in the media and to speak on any subject only after getting proper briefing from top RJD leaders, so that the party’s stand on any issue was well articulated. Spokespersons were directed not to give any interview or comment without proper approval of top leaders,” said state spokesperson Ashok Kumar Sinha.

What’s more, the state spokespersons were asked to be choosy in attending TV debates and to verify the credentials of the channel in advance. The missive is seen as an attempt by RJD top leaders to stay away from such channels, as have been aggressive against the RJD in recent times.

Sources said the widespread coverage of allegations by senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi against the RJD chief’s family members, for amassing property worth crores and the recent controversy pertaining to deputation of doctors at health minister Tej Pratap Yadav’s residence, had caused much consternation among the RJD brass, who feel the party’s stock may have gone down due to the negative publicity.

It wa also decided to induct a new set of spokespersons, including one woman and one senior leader each from minority and scheduled caste sections.

Many of the MLAs present at the meeting also stressed the need to strengthen the party’s media coordination in both print and electronic medium so that party’s point of view is well circulated.

Sitting MLA Ajeya Yadav, who is an educationist, is seen as a probable face of the party for state spokesperson while Shahin and one Rajendra Ram (both MLAs) are also likely to brought in to handle the media.
