Criminals open fire near DSP’s house at Bettiah

Unidentified criminals fired indiscriminately in air near the official residence of the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) at Bettiah, headquarters of West Champaran district in north Bihar, on Wednesday.
The criminals, riding a sports utility vehicle (SUV), also fired at a police jeep, parked in the locality — a high security zone at Bettiah, 198 km north of Patna. Though no one was injured, the incident has created panic in the area.
Police said they chased the criminals, who managed to escape after abandoning the vehicle.
The SUV, which had a flag of ruling Janata Dal (united) attached to it, had been seized, the police added.
The police said they also recovered from the SUV a letter addressed to Rajan Tiwary, former MLA from Govindganj in neighbouring East Champaran. They, however, refused to divulge the content of the letter.

Tiwari is an accused in the murder case of former MLA Ajit Sarkar and former minister Brij Bihari Prasad. His brother Raju Tiwari is the sitting MLA from Govindganj. DSP Sanjay Kumar Jha said the gang involved in the incident had been identified. Raids were being carried at their hideouts to arrest them, he added.
