England player Wayne Rooney retires from international football

Wayne Rooney, who has scored record goals for England, has announced his retirement from international football. 31-year-old Rooney attended 119 matches from England and scored 53 goals. They are the other players who do this after Peter Shilton. Rooney who debuted in 2003, broke the national record of Bobby Charlton’s 49 goals in September 2015.

After the World Cup, Rooney was appointed the permanent captain of the England team instead of Steve Gerrard. In November 2016, he played the last match for England against Scotland. He did not score any goals since England’s 16th in the 2016 Euro Cup.

Rooney said that Gareth Southgate had told me this week to call me back in the England team and in fact I would like to compliment him. He said that I had already thought and told Gareth that I have decided to retire from international football now. This decision was difficult for me and I also discussed it with my family.

He further said that playing for England has always been special to me. It is a matter of honor to choose me as captain or player every time. I thank every person who helps me, but now it’s time to go out of it.

Rooney wrote on his official Twitter handle that dreams can be fulfilled for England and that’s exactly what happened to me. Thanks to all the people involved.
