Godhra train burning case: Gujarat HC’s big decision, transfer of hanging of 11 convicts to life imprisonment

The Gujarat High Court has given a big decision in the Godhra carnage. The court has changed the death sentence of 11 convicts in this case to life imprisonment. While remaining the case, the trial court has upheld the lower court’s judgment.

The S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express was handed over to Godhra Station on February 27, 2002 , after which riots broke out in entire Gujarat. 59 people were killed after the fire in the train, mostly in ‘Karsevak’ returning from Ayodhya.

31 convicts proved guilty

The special court of SIT had convicted 31 people on March 1, 2011 in this case. While 63 were acquitted by the accused. Of the convicts, 11 were awarded death penalty while 20 were awarded life imprisonment. This court verdict was challenged in the Gujarat High Court. On behalf of the convicted accused, the appeal was made against the decision, along with the decision of acquiring 63 accused on behalf of the Gujarat government.

Considering the conspiracy behind the incident, the special court found the accused guilty under the sections of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.

These accused are released

Those who were released by the court in these cases, the main accused, Maulana Umerji, the then President of Godhra municipality, Mohammed Hussein Kalota, Mohammad Ansari and Nanumiyi Chowdhary of Gangapur, Uttar Pradesh were the ones.

In order to investigate this massacre, the Nanavati Commission, formed by the Gujarat government, had said in its report that the fire in the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was not an accident, but it was handed over to the fire.

As soon as the Sabarmati Express reached near Godhra railway station on the morning of 27th February, a coach of the fire started flaming fire and smoke started coming out. There was a heavy fire inside the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati train. From which the passengers present in the coach got hit him.

Most of these were the carcasses, who were returning from a program in Ayodhya under the Ram temple movement. 59 kar sevaks were burnt to death by fire. Who gave this incident a big political shape and put an indelible stain on Gujarat’s forehead.
