5.10pm Clinical. From start to finish. Powerful. From beginning to end. And classy. India outlast and outclass Bangladesh in another one-sided semi-final, to give themselves a chance to defend their title on Sunday. Bangladesh can be proud of a terrific effort, they fought and scrapped through the tournament but were eventually done in by the quality of India. That’s two let-downs of semi-finals, but that sets up one heck of a final, at least in foresight. In their chase of 265, they started well – solidly, putting the bad ball away. That’s all they did through the afternoon, to be fair, and romped to a nine-wicket win.

Rohit Sharma is the Man of the Match: “Was a great knock, especially when it comes on a winning note. Trying to get a big one, in the last two games. Was quite determined today. Wicket was brilliant. I kept telling myself to bat as much as possible. We’ve been playing good cricket. One last hurdle, a big game against Pakistan. It felt like he was batting overnight (Virat Kohli). As a captain, he was brilliant.”

Virat Kohli: “Another complete game. We needed to have a clean, collective game. We didn’t expect to win by nine wickets, but that’s the quality of our top order. He’s not a surprise package (Kedar Jadhav), he’s a smart guy, he knows where to pitch the ball and see what the wicket is offering. it could have been close to 300. I wanted to give myself some time, 10-15 balls. Last time, we lost a wicket, so I had to adapt, I like those challenges. I grew in confidence. When you’re coming onto the short ball, you know you’re playing well. We’re taking it as any other game, I know that’s boring but that’s our mindset. Never a worry when your middle order isn’t batting too much. Everyone is hitting the ball magnificently in practice.”

Mashrafe Mortaza: “We could have scored 300, even 320, but our set batsmen getting out was a setback to us. Next time, we’ll come back strongly. We need to learn. Skill-wise we’re fine, but mentally we need to be stronger.”

Don’t forget, it’s Rahul Dravid who will join Shaun Tait and Ajit Agarkar in Match Day. Homepage, top-right corner of this page (desktop), take your pick. Tune in.

40.1

Sabbir Rahman to Kohli, FOUR, and that will be it. Kohli finishes on 96. A very wide overpitched delivery that is crisply driven, one of many today, through cover for four. A punch of the air, more delight than annoyance. And India set up another blockbuster on Sunday with Pakistan to determine the winners of the 2017 Champions Trophy

A two and a six gets Kohli 100, but I don’t think he cares about it. Sabbir to continue. India one over away.

“Whatever happens in Edgbaston today, India already has a big winner. Twenty-four-year-old HS Prannoy pulled off a huge upset at the Indonesia Open, beating World No.3 Lee Chong Wei 21-10, 21-18, though Prannoy himself is playing it cool.”

36.5

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, 1 run, a shortish delivery on middle, pulled away to deep square leg

36.4

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, FOUR, a no-look pull for four. A well-directed bouncer on middle, Rohit pulls and plays this behind square. Not quite in complete control, but he met the ball at the perfect time – to get it behind square

Rajdip: “Kohli completes 500 runs in Champions Trophy”

36.3

Dino: “Looking at Virat’s stats and age 28, wondering how many ODI runs he will end up when he hangs his boot. 20,000?”

17.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, no run, length ball on off stump, defended into the covers

17.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, 2 runs, ooh, dangerous. Slower ball, fairly full outside off. Rohit is early into the drive, checks himself, and spoons it in the air but to the left of extra-cover. Bottom hand comes off the handle as he plays the shot

Mustafizur Rahman to Kohli, 1 run, length ball slanting across to off stump, stretches out and plays a nice checked push to deep point

17.1

16.4

Rubel Hossain to Kohli, 1 run, short on off stump, pulled to long leg

15.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Sharma, FOUR, some flight again, outside off, and this time Rohit drives to the cover boundary. Too full from Shakib here

15.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Sharma, FOUR, floated up outside off and Rohit drives square. Poor fielding at backward point by Mashrafe, a little slow diving left, and the ball races away for four fairly preventable runs

14.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kohli, no run, back of a length outside off, gets nicely behind it to defend into the covers

Thanks, Nikhil. Virat Kohli has walked in to bat. Can Bangladesh get another now and put some serious pressure on India? One wide-ish slip in place.

Drinks. Karthik Krishnaswamy is back.

14.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, OUT, somehow Dhawan chips his wicket away! It’s yet another offcutter outside off, Dhawan shimmies down and looks to hit over mid-off but the ball skews off the outside half and goes towards point’s left. That cut, off the ball, may have been the reason for the ball going to point, as opposed to mid-off.

S Dhawan c Mosaddek Hossain b Mashrafe Mortaza 46 (34b 7×4 1×6) SR: 135.29

14.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, FOUR, not good bowling. He has been getting away with that length, but not this time. Another bouncer with no pace. Dhawan gets inside the line of that and pulls behind square. All along the ground

Abdul Rauf Saee: “Once Pakistan was struggling to qualify for CT2017, and now they are in Finals. Scenes Changed Dramatically.”

14.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, no run, another slower delivery on off, nice lines. Pushed to mid-on.

14.1

12.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, 1 run, another bouncer, outside off. Pulled to deep square leg

12.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, 1 run, that’s a bouncer on leg, doesn’t hurry the batsman who pulls towards fine leg with no trouble at all

12.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, no run, an offcutter outside off, pushed into the off side. A misfield at cover makes them think of a run, but they decide against it

12.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, 1 run, too much width with that length. Rohit can stay back and hit a punchy stab to the sweeper cover

Rubel Hossain to Dhawan, no run, 139 kph, short outside off, punched to point. Decent over from Rubel, but what they need is an over that has four wickets

Sha: “Ind vs Pak twice in an ICC tournament. Has that ever happened before?”

11.5

Rubel Hossain to Sharma, 1 run, too straight from Rubel, nudged to fine leg for another run

11.4

Rubel Hossain to Dhawan, 1 run, a slower delivery on leg, worked away through square leg for a single

11.3

Rubel Hossain to Dhawan, no run, full delivery outside off, pushed to cover

Kapil: “Looks like its done and dusted. BD haven’t show any confidence in themselves with both bat and ball. 320 was on, ended woefully short and now with ball in hand, they are leaking runs easily, so looks like India vs Pak final”

11.2

Rubel Hossain to Dhawan, FOUR, too straight again. And pays the price. Dhawan just gets some bat. Doesn’t need more. And the ball flies away to the short fine leg boundary

Dhaval : “India looks best when they play their natural game which is attacking.. The best part is they play according to the bowling attack which 90% works for them. ”

RPS: “20 out of 31 of Rohit are boundaries. Rohit should stop hogging strike and rotate. 20 balls faced by Dhawan and 40 by Rohit. Its OK in a match like this but will make a world of difference in a tight match ”

11.1

Rubel Hossain to Sharma, 1 run, too short, too wide, too simple. Carved to third man

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, slower delivery on off, 112 kph. Rohit strides forward to defend

10.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, 1 run, a bouncer, slower delivery, offcutter. Helped along to fine leg. This is hardly troublesome bowling

10.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, 1 run, a late cut off the 123 kph length delivery to third man earns Rohit one more

10.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, Rohit sends Dhawan back again. Fullish around off, dabbed towards point. Dhawan comes hurtling down before being sent back by Rohit. The throw isn’t accurate, so all’s well

7.6

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, SIX, 132 kph, humongous. Another one that he drops short outside off, it isn’t troubling Dhawan. He is so quick on that length that his bat speed through the ball is so quick that the ball flies over square leg. Amazing stroke-making

7.5

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, FOUR, four more. And Dhawan re-takes the top spot in the run-making charts of this tournament. Taskin drops short, on middle and leg. Dhawan pulls, places this intentionally behind square by getting there slightly early. Wow

Aman Agarwal: “Bangladesh took a risk or two too many in the first 10, whereas these Indian openers have operated on auto-pilot. The biggest difference between the sides”

7.4

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, no run, good length around off, played back towards the bowler

7.3

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, FOUR, oh yeah. Awesome. Good length outside off, not short or wide enough to cut. So Dhawan chooses a different option, a punchy stab into the surface towards point. It hits the pitch adjacent and bounces over point. Exemplary timing

7.2

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, 1 run, full and straight, 142 kph. Rohit gets to the ball slightly late and gets a thick inside edge to fine leg

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, 1 run, short delivery on leg, pulled down to fine leg for a sing

6.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good end. Fullish around off, comes back in, but not much trouble for Rohit in his defense

6.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, FOUR, picks the length so early. No entirely short. Good length. But it’s the lack of pace that helps this shot. Good length on middle, sits up for Rohit to swat over midwicket. Just too easy

6.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, full outside off, played back towards the bowler

6.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good length delivery outside off, more movement back in. Defended, with bat and pad close together

6.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, fullish and wide outside off, some seam movement back in. Shovelled towards midwicket

6.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good length delivery outside off, a hint of away shape. Pushed to extra cover from the back foot

5.6

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, FOUR, too short. Sits up for Dhawan. Tries the bouncer, tries something different off the last ball. On middle and leg, not enough pace. Dhawan is able to pull through backward square leg. All along the ground.

5.5

Taskin Ahmed to Dhawan, no run, good length outside off, not much movement. Pushed away into the off side

5.4

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, 1 run, nicely played. Not short enough but there is enough width. Rohit closes up any gap between bat and pad and guides this down to third man

PALADUGU: “I think Fizz lost a bit of pace after the injury. Remember seeing him bowl around the 140 mark where as now he is bowling around mid 135’s just in his first spell.”

5.3

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, no run, too full, outside off, a half-volley. Driven to short cover.

5.2

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, no run, overpitched, a yorker on off is jammed away towards mid-on

AB: “Dhawan just a few runs behind Tamim for the race to Golden bat.. provided that India should win this, he will get another opportunity. He should make space in his luggage for the coveted prize.”

5.1

Taskin Ahmed to Sharma, no run, edged but lands well short of slip. Short and wide, the ball seaming back in. Rohit gets an under edge towards the slip fielder, who does well to stop runs

Taskin replaces Mustafizur

Slip to midwicket

4.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, FOUR, oh yes. That’s incredible. Another offcutter, but this is outside off, spinning back in slightly. Rohit brings his bat down at a different angle and flicks the ball through midwicket. No one there. Wrist power

4.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, nice lines, but punched away without much fuss to mid-off. With that length, Rohit can hang back and play with time to spare

4.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good length outside off, 128 kph, no movement, no pace. Rohit punches to cover.

4.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, 1 run, an offcutter on the pads, worked to square leg, 118 kph. This is just far too easy

End of over 4 (12 runs) India 25/0 (240 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 6.25, RRR: 5.21)

    • Mustafizur Rahman2-0-21-0
    • Mashrafe Mortaza2-0-4-0
3.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, FOUR, the best of ’em all. Allll timing, all class. Full and straight, Rohit offers the full face, high elbow, head over the ball and just lets ball meet bat. No over-hitting, no lofting. Crisp through mid-on

3.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, no run, on a length, around off, better comeback but played away towards square leg

3.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, FOUR, 133 kph, full and wide outside off, too much width and the length is hittable too. Rohit sinks his back foot, perhaps waiting for a shorter length, but then improvises nicely to drill a square drive. Sensational timing.

Pankaj: “I think India needs to start steady like they have been doing for sometime now since they are not chasing a big total. A good 100/1 or so in the first 20 overs would lay a good platform for the middle order. I think they can play some risk free cricket”

3.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, no run, tight around off, defended back

How about a 7-2 field with his offcutters? Make him do something else by boring him

3.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, no run, 135 kph, good length outside off, cramping Rohit for room, defended towards point

Around the wicket

walrus: “Agree. Mustafiz is most effective with the older ball cutting through the middle overs. He has never got as many wickets with the new ball, with whatever little swing he finds. Taskin and Rubel generate far better swing and bounce. Mash and the coach need to sort out proper roles for all players, both batsmen and bowlers.”

3.1

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, FOUR, too much width. Pitches it up, wide and full outside off. Rohit leans forward and caresses a square drive into the surface. Wide of point and races away

End of over 3 (2 runs) India 13/0 (252 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 4.33, RRR: 5.36)

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, no run, fullish length, straight and accurate, played back towards the bowler. Decent over, but a tad too defensive?

2.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, no run, an offcutter on leg, defended back. Nothing troublesome here early

Bhavnesh: “It’s the same defensive tactic they tried against Rohit in CWC 2015, and were able to keep him quiet. Don’t think it’s gonna work this time – 1. India are chasing a modest total; 2. Rohit would be better prepared this time.”

2.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, 1 run, on a length on off, worked through square leg for one. Just too simple. This is exactly what India want in the first few overs

sohail: “So glad I have a corner desk in the office, no one can see that all I’ve been doing for the past two weeks is follow the cricket on cricinfo! ”

2.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good length outside off, 130 kph. Rohit stays back and works the ball to mid-on

2.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, 1 run, nicely played. Transfers his weight onto the front foot and then leans into a drive to find a gap through point. A deep point fielder cleans up.

TJ: “Mustafizur should not open the bowling. Doesn’t generate swing/bounce. This is where I feel David Warner knew how to use him far better than Mashrafe does. Tough gig for someone still so inexperienced.”

2.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dhawan, no run, full outside off, 132 kph, brings Dhawan forward, crisply driven to mid-off

Nagraj Gollapudi tried to figure out why Shikhar Dhawan is so good at big events

1.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Sharma, no run, good end. 135 kph, fuller than a good length outside off, Rohit is hesitant but plays the ball towards cover

Quite a defensive field already. Fine leg is up. One slip. Short cover in place

1.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Dhawan, 1 run, back of a length on leg, easy pickings. A simple nudge through square leg for one.

1.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Dhawan, no run, good length, on a fourth-stump channel. Better comeback. Defended towards cover

1.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Dhawan, FOUR, cannot bowl there to Dhawan. 132 kph outside off, sits up for Dhawan to hammer through point with a terrific cut shot. In the air, but he knew where he wanted to hit that

1.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Dhawan, FOUR, lovely shot. Good length outside off, Dhawan stays back in the crease but still manages to find a gap in front of cover for four. His weight was on the back foot, yet got enough power.

In today’s Champions Trophy chatter, why is Shane Warne wearing an England shirt?

0.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, 133 kph, back of a length outside off. Rohit stays back and punches to extra cover.

Arjun: “I think Bangladesh are a 40 runs short. Its a flat wicket. This tournament almost all matches have been chased well. Confident of a calm, easy Indian run chase ”

0.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, nice comeback. Keeps it on a length outside off, Rohit plays it towards cover with as straight a bat as possible

0.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, good length delivery outside off, not much movement. Defended back

0.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, no run, beautiful. Length delivery outside off, lifts and kicks and beats the bat of Rohit outside off

James : “The highest successful chase by India in Birmingham is 212, 3 years ago. Perhaps some hope for Bangladesh there?” Perhaps.

0.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sharma, 2 runs, an untidy start, a length ball on leg, clipped through square leg for a couple. Nice timing

2.15pm Welcome back. Imperative that Bangladesh take early wickets to stand a chance. Best batting conditions of the day, the sun is out, blazing sunshine, relatively flat surface. Rohit and Dhawan walk out. Just one slip in place. Captain Mashrafe with the ball. It could come down to if Bangladesh can get India 140 for 5? Here we go.

End of over 50 (6 runs) Bangladesh 264/7

    • Taskin Ahmed10 (14b 1×4 0x6)
    • Mashrafe Mortaza30 (25b 5×4 0x6)
    • B Kumar10-1-53-2
    • JJ Bumrah10-1-39-2

1.50pm When Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim were in the middle of their century stand, it looked like Bangladesh would easily get to 300. They’ve only managed 264, thanks to the golden arm of Kedar Jadhav, and some tight middle- and end-overs bowling from India in general. Useful partnership of 35 between Mashrafe and Taskin, but they only went at 7 an over. Which was fine given Bangladesh’s situation, but they would have loved to have preserved a couple more wickets for the slog overs. Still, a fighting total, and they have a pretty good mix of bowlers, but you’ll have to fancy India to chase this down.

Anyway, Nikhil will be back at 2.45pm to bring you the start of the chase. Until then, here’s a bit of news. India have picked Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant in their limited-overs squad for the upcoming tour of the West Indies.

And don’t forget to watch Match Day – Rahul Dravid is on our show today.

For those not near a desktop, you can also watch Rahul Dravid on Match Day on our Facebook page.

abhishek kharwa: “India started bowling 10 minutes late and ended uo thier 50 overs before 10 minutes of stipulated time…excellent over rate..”

Sundar: “You end-over scores have been off by 5 runs for quite some time now. Since that penalty runs I think” — It’s something to do with our scoring display, and its inability to handle penalty runs. I reiterate, Bangladesh made 264, and not 259.

49.6

Kumar to Taskin Ahmed, 1 run, length ball on off stump, makes a bit of room and flat-bats to long-off

Dhoni’s pulled off his right glove and stuck it into his waistband. We all know what happened when he last did that against Bangladesh…

49.5

Kumar to Mashrafe Mortaza, 1 run, off-stump yorker, and that’s nicely played by Mashrafe. Opens his bat face and stabs it off the middle of the bat… but straight to Ashwin at backward point

39.4

Ashwin to Mosaddek Hossain, 2 leg byes, tossed up on a good length on middle stump, comes forward to clip into the square leg region

Pavan Allada: “@Karthik: Meanwhile, Jadeja has become the first bowler in this CT to bowl a full continuous spell of 10 overs!” — After all my complaints, Nikhil ended up doing all ten Jadeja overs. Ha!

39.1

Ashwin to Mosaddek Hossain, no run, full on middle stump, driven to short midwicket

Hello again. Whodathunk Kedar Jadhav would halt what seemed like Tamim and Mushfiqur’s inexorable march. Great moments for any connoisseur of part-time filth. Could that drop of Mahmudullah, though, have given Bangladesh just the impetus they needed to recover? Let’s see. Ashwin to continue.

38.4

Pandya to Mahmudullah, no run, wow, comes down and looks to send this into the stands at midwicket, but the ball flies past his swing

38.3

Pandya to Mahmudullah, FOUR, dropped by Ashwin. Short and wide outside off, Mahmudullah can’t keep his cut down. It flies towards third man, to his left, where Ashwin gets there with time to spare but the ball spills out as he tumbles over. Not easy, but should have been taken at this level

hridoy: “This situation would be completely different had Sabbir and Mossadek exchanged batting positions as the whole world except the coach wants.”

38.2

Too close to cut, Shakib goes back and tries to hit the gap in front of point but Jadeja’s flat trajectory and angle (the ball spinning in) means it’s not a high percentage stroke. The ball skids on with the arm and takes a thick edge. Quite a big deflection.
