Prakash Javadekar make it clean- nor the ‘Hindu word ‘ be removed from BHU, neither ‘Muslim’ from AMU

‘Muslim’ words from ‘Aligarh Muslim University’ (AMU) and ‘Hindu’ from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) should be removed as they do not reflect the secular character of both the universities. This recommendation has been made by a committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

However, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has clarified that there is no intention of removing ‘Hindu’ and ‘Muslim’ words from AMU with BHU. Javdekar said in Ahmedabad on Monday even a committee of the UGC has recommended such a recommendation which is not a part of the mandate of that committee. Meanwhile, Union Minority Welfare Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has opposed this recommendation and rejected it.

Constitution of the UGC Committee

The UGC Committee was formed to investigate alleged irregularities in 10 central universities. Recommendations of the Committee have been given in the audit report of Aligarh Muslim University.

Recommend to remove Hindu-Muslim words

A member of the committee, on the condition of not opening the name, told that the universities running the center fund are secular institutions and such words (Hindu, Muslim) do not show their character. According to the committee member, the names of both universities can be made from Aligarh University and Banaras University. The UGC Committee, in addition to the BHU and AMU, included the alleged irregularities of the universities, Allahabad University, Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna University (Uttarakhand), Central University of Jharkhand, Central University of Jammu, Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University Wardha, The University of Tripura and Hari Singh Gour University (Madhya Pradesh).
